The Jewish Federation of Peoria
(Organized 1933, Incorporated 1947)
The Jewish Federation of Peoria is an incorporated, not for profit organization (501C3), which serves Jewish families
in Peoria and the immediate surrounding communities. The objectives of the Federation include:
· Engagement in philanthropic, cultural, and communal activities of the Jewish community
· Cooperation among Jewish communal organizations
· Stimulation of an interfaith spirit in Peoria and Central Illinois
· Opposition to all forms of racial and religious prejudice and discrimination
The mission of the Jewish Federation of Peoria is to serve the Jewish people locally, in Israel, and throughout the world
through coordinated fundraising, community-wide programming, social services, and social-cultural-educational activities.
Support of the Jewish Federation of Peoria provides local programming (see committees), as well as funding for social services,
educational programs, and the needs of Jews in 60 countries around the globe. The international needs are met by our overseas
partners: JAFI (see below) and JDC (see below)
The Jewish Federation of Peoria is a member of the United Jewish Communities (UJC),
which represents both the fundraising and service providing goals of Jewish life.
The Jewish Federation of Peoria is also a member of the
Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA),
our national community relations organization.
United Jewish Communities (UJC) represents and serves 155 Jewish Federations and 400 independent Jewish communities
across North America. It reflects the values of social justice and human rights that define the Jewish people. UJC is the force
that transforms lives and performs miracles.
United Jewish Communities promotes the tolerance, understanding, and excitement that create vibrant communities of
Jewish learning and growth.and crosses all borders to provide care for the poor, food for the hungry, and advocacy and
compassion for everyone who needs it. UJC was established to chart a new course for the Jewish community: to improve
the quality of Jewish life worldwide, nurture Jewish learning, care for those in need, rescue Jews in danger, and ensure the
continuity of our people.
Through the United Jewish Appeal Federation Campaign, United Jewish Communities provides life-saving and life-enhancing
humanitarian assistance to those in need, and translates Jewish values into social action on behalf of millions of Jews in
hundreds of communities in North America, in towns and villages throughout Israel, in the former Soviet Union, and in 60
countries around the world. Through work with the
American Joint Distribution committee and the
Jewish Agency for Israel
UJC is able to meet the needs of Jews in 60 countries all over the globe, including Israel and the Former Soviet Union. Through
the Israel Emergency Campaign, United Jewish Communities and the Jewish Federation of North America we are providing
economic, social and human welfare.
Federation is the people who care enough to want to change an imperfect world. Federation is the passion of commitment,
where Tzedakah and a sense of social justice can make a difference in someone's life.
JDC -- The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee:
Since 1914, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Inc. (JDC) has
served as the overseas arm of the American Jewish community. Their mission
is to serve the needs of Jews throughout the world, particularly where their
lives as Jews are threatened or made more difficult. JDC sponsors programs
of relief, rescue and renewal and helps Israel address its most urgent
social challenges.
Through the UJA Federation Campaign, UJC provides the greatest funding for
JDC's core budget. Other major funding partners include: the Conference on
Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (the Claims Conference), World Jewish
Relief (United Kingdom), Canadian Jewry, government agencies, and other
international organizations.
JAFI -- Jewish Agency for Israel:
For almost 75 years, the Jewish Agency for Israel has been synonymous with the efforts to rescue Jews at risk and the
resettlement of the Jewish People in Israel. As the world's major Jewish partnership organization, JAFI strives to strengthen
the connection between Jews everywhere who share a common heritage, identity, and homeland - Israel. Major activities
include the rescue of Jews in distress, facilitating aliyah and absorption, Jewish Zionist education and building a global Jewish
community. In addition to extensive programs in Israel, JAFI operates in close to 80 countries on five continents through a
network of over 450 emissaries, including hundreds of formal and informal educators.
The world Jewish community participates in the Jewish Agency's decision-making process through the Assembly, its
supreme governing body, and its Board of Governors, which is responsible for policy making and overseeing the organization.
